Should You Buy a Unique Engagement Ring?

When you are watching a movie and a man proposes to a woman, he pulls the perfect ring out of his pocket, one that she absolutely loves and fits her perfectly. How does that happen? Chances are that your fiancée-to-be will have a very specific idea of what she wants her ring to look like, and the chances of you nailing it on the head with one that you pick out on your own is highly unlikely.

There is a move toward women choosing a unique engagement ring in the last few years rather than one that is a simple solitary diamond. Women like something that is different from what their friends have and one that will really stand out. Therefore, if you are going to take a chance and buy an engagement ring without first talking about it, here are a few things that you should think about.

1.    If you are going to buy a unique engagement ring, or one that is really not like one you have seen before, then you should spend some time with your girlfriend looking at rings. Just because you are looking at rings doesn’t mean that you are going to propose to her, but it shows her that you want to buy her something (maybe!) that she will really love. Not getting her input ahead of time could be a huge mistake.

2.    The price of gold is as high as it has ever been, and that is one reason why people are choosing slightly different types of rings. Of course, your biggest concern may be the diamond, its size, and its cost, but in reality, the setting is a major part of the expense. Few people can afford anything more than 14K right now, but if you can, 18K is always preferable. A woman can spot 18K a mile away, and it will impress all of her friends.

3.    Because the engagement ring is only one part of a set, when you buy a unique engagement ring, you will have to consider the type of wedding ring that will go along with it. Although after you are married, your wife may only wear the wedding band on a daily basis, there will be times when they want to flaunt the ring you proposed with, too, so make sure that they two of them really do go together. Ideally, they should be bought as a set at the same time.

There are several different types of settings and a multitude of designs that you can choose from, not to mention the wide variety of diamond styles, sizes, and cuts. Chances are that your girlfriend will want a unique engagement ring that is not just one solitary diamond on a gold setting, and by getting her input ahead of time, you will be able to make her dreams come true. If you end up buying something that is not really “her,” then you could be paying a lot of money for a ring that never leaves her jewelry box.
